The Miniature
American Shepherd
The Miniature American Shepherd was developed in the United States during the late 1960s from smaller Australian Shepherds. Breeders selectively preserved the intelligence, athleticism, and herding ability of the Australian Shepherd while creating a more compact, versatile dog suited for both work and companionship.
Originally known as “Miniature Australian Shepherds,” these dogs became popular among horse enthusiasts and active families. Over time, dedicated breeders worked to establish consistent size, structure, and temperament, leading to the development of a distinct breed identity.
The name Miniature American Shepherd was adopted as the breed pursued formal recognition, and in 2015 the American Kennel Club officially recognized the breed in the Herding Group. Today, the Miniature American Shepherd is valued for its versatility, trainability, and balance as both a working partner and companion.
Brief History
Miniature American Shepherds are an active, intelligent herding breed that require daily physical exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and well-balanced. Most adults benefit from at least 60–90 minutes of activity per day, which can include walks, play sessions, training, hiking, or dog sports like agility, rally, or obedience. In addition to physical exercise, they thrive on learning and engagement, so incorporating training games, enrichment toys, and structured activities helps prevent boredom and supports their natural drive to work alongside their people.

Miniature American Shepherds have a medium-length double coat that’s fairly easy to maintain with consistent upkeep: plan to brush 2–3 times per week (more during seasonal shedding) to remove loose undercoat and prevent mats, and bathe about every 4–8 weeks or as needed. Routine care also includes nail trims, ear checks/cleaning, and light tidying around the feet, paw pads, hocks, and sanitary areas. Shaving the coat isn’t recommended unless medically necessary.
